SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY JOBLESS RATE HITS 17.5 PERCENT IN JULY – SAME AS LAST YEAR

San Joaquin County’s unemployment rate rose to 17.5 percent in July, up from a revised 16.6 percent in June, on the usual mid-summer lull in farm activity and public schools on break, state jobs officials reported Friday.

It was even with the estimated 17.5 percent jobless rate in July 2010, the Employment Development Department reported.

Compared to June, county farmers and packing operations shed 9,600 workers, while public schools employment was down 5,100 for the month and private schools dropped 600 payroll positions.

The county unemployment rate compares to California’s July unadjusted rate of 12.4 percent and a national jobless rate of 9.3 percent.
