The O-I Glass Containers plant just outside Tracy is joining with more than 50 other glass container manufacturing plants in celebrating Recycle Glass Week through the Glass Packaging Institute. The event hopes to encourage people to recycle glass bottles and jars.

Members of the Tracy plant’s Glass Awareness Committee had an employee recycling drive for the facility’s 465 workers. The employees were encouraged to take in as much glass for recycling as they could, which would be collected and weighed at a local recycling company. O-I would give the market value of just over 10 cents per pound for their recycling efforts, money the committee will use for community outreach and education programs on glass recycling.

The O-I plant has been in Tracy since 1962 and operates three furnaces feeding seven machines, which produce 2,900,000 bottles each day. The plant operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides glass beverage containers for companies such as Lipton Tea, Sobe, Anheuser-Busch and Sierra Nevada.
