LODI – A long-awaited Costco Wholesale store opened at 8 a.m. in Lodi today, attracting hundreds of local residents to its in-bulk merchandise, electronics, cheap gas and food samples.

The Costco, located in Reynolds Ranch on Harney Lane off of Highway 99, is the corporation’s only opening in California this year and has been touted by Lodi officials as a catalyst for jobs and retail sales in a down economy. A Home Depot, Best Buy, and BevMo are expected to join Costco in the development as early as 2012.

The 154,000-square-foot store also has a 16-pump gas station.
